How to Start a Shampoo Production Business and Make Money in Nigeria

The shampoo is a liquid hair care product that people use to effectively remove dirt, oils, stains, and left-overs of hair products from their hair.

It is a sticky liquid product that people apply to their wet hair and massages carefully to get their desired result.

Almost every living being on this planet uses shampoo to wash their hair in order to wade off the development of fungus, dandruff, dryness, rashes, and itching.

In Nigeria, barbershops and beauty salons use shampoo to wash their customers’ hair every day. Also, barbers mix the shampoo with hair dye to get a sticky solution and to make washing off the hair dye easy after the application.

The shampoo is one of the fast-selling products in the hair industry. The demand for shampoo is high, so you don’t need to bother if you will be able to find customers for your product. There are so many unfilled gaps in the marketplace. Just make sure you produce a quality one that delivers the desired result.

Take for instance: average barbershop and beauty salon use 1 litre of shampoo every week—that’s 4 litres in a month—multiply by the number of salons in Nigeria. See profits! They do say: what will make someone rich may be something he sees everyday; something that s/he doesn’t take note of.

Apart from barbershops and salons, individuals also buy the product to keep their hair clean. Majority of the people who take their hair care seriously  do wash their hair with shampoo every three day before they have their bath.

Companies and individuals that are producing shampoo declare profits every year. It’s a consumable good that people will always demand for so long as hair grows on their head.

Starting shampoo production requires a little capital, so you don’t need to look for a loan before starting the business. The chemical ingredients needed for production can be sourced and bought easily at the chemical markets in Nigeria.

In this blog post, you will read about shampoo production step by step. Let’s dive in.

WHAT ARE THE PIECES OF EQUIPMENT NEEDED FOR THE PRODUCTION?

  • Plastic bowls
  • Steel spoons
  • Stick – for stirring
  • Containers
  • Paper tape- for labeling

WHAT ARE THE CHEMICAL INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR THE PRODUCTION?

  • Water (8 to 10 litres)
  • Caustic soda(¼ kg)
  • Nitrosol (⅛)
  • Texapon (½ kg)
  • Sulphonic acid ½ litre
  • Vitamin E 1 teaspoon
  • Citric acid 1 tablespoon
  • Soda Ash (½ litres)
  • Glycerine (4 tablespoonfuls)
  • Fragrance (as you want)
  • STPP (2 tablespoonfuls)
  • Colour (as desired)
  • Preservative (some drops)

HOW TO START THE PRODUCTION PROCESS?

  1. Pour Nitrosol in 6 litres of water into a plastic bowl and stir continuously.
  2. You must ferment your caustic soda 24 – 48 hours before you start production. This is how you ferment your caustic soda: Mix the caustic soda with water in a ratio of 1: 2 (Caustic Soda 2kg to 4 litres of water ). Mix by stirring with a stick. Then leave the solution for 24- 48 hours to ferment.
  3. In another bowl: mix sulphonic acid and texapon together to the first mixture in step A.
  4. Pour glycerine and use your stick to stir them together very well.
  5. Add fermented soda ash and stir very well.
  6. Soak STTP in a litre of water and pour it into your mixture inside the bowl.
  7. In a separate bowl: dissolve the citric acid with 0.5 litres of water, add it to your mixing bowl and stir well.
  8. Pour the vitamin E and stir everything together properly
  9. Add the fragrance of your choice and stir everything together correctly.
  10. You can go the extra mile by adding some quantity of soybean oil to it. Soybean oil is rich in hair nutrients. It provides nourishment and strength to the hair. (You can use this to market your product)
  11. Pour the colour into a small quantity of water. Use something to stir it together and allow it to dissolve properly, after that, you pour it inside your mixture and stir together correctly. ( The quantity of the colour you will see depends on the result you want to see)
  12. Leave it for a while to settle.
  13. Start packaging it for sale.

HOW WILL YOU FIND CUSTOMERS FOR YOUR PRODUCTS?

The best way to start is to introduce your shampoo product to your family, co-tenants, co-workers, and friends. Talk about the benefits of your shampoo and how it’s better than the available ones in the market.

Look around, enter the barbershops and beauty salons you see and introduce your product to them. You can offer to give them the product sample for free and come back for feedback after a week. You can offer to be supplying them every time they need the shampoo. You can even do a pay-later marketing strategy. You can think of other means of beating the businesses offering this same product in the marketplace.

You can also try to be selling in bulk to wholesalers and retailers instead of focusing on consumers only. You will make money fast using this method too.

If you want to do more by supplying supermarkets and provisions stores, you will need to brand your product very well. Design your product sticker to be eye-catching and glossy, and go to a plastic manufacturing company to produce a better container for your product.

Having a NAFDAC ID for your shampoo is also a must. All other brands in the supermarkets registered their products with NAFDAC. Furthermore, the calibre of the people you are selling to don’t take the issue of authenticity lightly. Before most of them pay for any product, they check for the expiry date and NAFDAC number. Nowadays, getting your product to be certified by NAFDAC is no longer overwhelming as it used to be.

In conclusion

There is no business idea that cannot make you rich. The important thing is how you run your business. If you have any questions or opinions or complaints, don’t hesitate to drop comments.
